Students and residents of Nichols Hills live within proximity to a number of colleges and universities. These include Southern Nazarene University in Bethany; Oklahoma City University; Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City; Rose State College in Midwest City; Oklahoma City Community College; and the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
Attractions & Points of Interest
Residents have plenty to look forward to throughout the year in terms of holidays and community-wide festivals and events. Starting in the spring during April is the Annual Redbud Race Weekend and the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. The month of June brings about the annual Nichols Hills Garden Tour and The Nichols Hills Band Concerts, which runs from June to August. The autumn months of September and October hosts the Pooch Parade and the Spooky Spirit Fun Run for Kids, while December features the annual Sleigh Ride Social holiday event.
Nichols Hills also serves as the summer home of the Mississippi Kite, a hawk that roosts and makes its nests throughout the tree clusters and woodlands of the community's parks. Nature lovers and bird watchers will want to observe the Mississippi Kites along the many running trails in Nichols Hills during the summer months of July and August. Of course, like all wildlife, these hawks will defend their nest and young if they feel threatened, so it's best to observe these birds from a distance.
Oklahoma County is home to over 100 sites of interest that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; one of them is even located in Nichols Hills, the Frank and Merle Buttram House and Grounds. Located on Nichols Road, this home now serves as a recreational and cultural museum that is significant for its beaux art architectural style. The home itself was built in 1938. Other local historical sites of interest located throughout the county include the Automobile Alley Historic District, Cain's Coffee Building, Citizens State Bank, Oklahoma City University, the Oklahoma City National Memorial, Union Depot, and the Oklahoma State Capitol, among a long list of many others.
Parks & Recreation
Residents of Nichols Hills don't have to venture very far to embark in some outdoor recreational activities. For instance, located just a short drive away is Lake Hefner and the Hefner Golf Course. Lake Hefner features a variety of amenities such as jogging and biking trails, boat ramps, a heated fishing dock, the covered pavilion at the Stars and Stripes Park, and the East Wharf Restaurant. The Overholser Canal connects Lake Hefner to Lake Overholser. In addition to the Hefner Golf Course, golfers can head out to the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club to practice their swing out on the links. Residents may also drive out to the Oklahoma City metro area and play a few rounds of golf at the Lincoln Park West Golf Course and Lincoln Park East Golf Course. Nichols Hills is also home to 38 landscaped parks that feature a variety of unique amenities that residents can take pleasure in. |
